CVE-2025-15089: High Buffer Overflow in UTT 512W Router

CVE-2025-15089: buffer overflow in UTT 512W firmware via /goform/APSecurity. Authenticated, remote. No fix named. Restrict admin access and ask the vendor.

CVE-2025-15089 is a high severity buffer overflow in the UTT 512W router, firmware up to 1.7.7-171114. The wepkey1 argument sent to /goform/APSecurity is copied with an unsafe strcpy call. NVD scores it 8.8. The record names no fixed firmware, so check the vendor and limit access to the admin interface.

What's affected

The record covers the UTT 512W and its firmware up to and including 1.7.7-171114. The vulnerable code is the strcpy call in the handler for /goform/APSecurity, reached through the wepkey1 argument. No fixed firmware version appears in the record or in the references we could read, so confirm with the vendor before assuming a newer image closes it. Several sibling CVEs in the same product were reported in the same run of research, so a fix for one handler does not prove the others are fixed.

How to check if you're exposed

Find the firmware version in the router's web interface, usually on a system or about page, and compare it with 1.7.7-171114. Anything at or below that is in scope.

Then see who can reach the admin interface. From a machine outside your network, test whether the management port answers on the router's public address.

nmap -Pn -p 80,443,8080 YOUR_ROUTER_PUBLIC_IP

The vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) shows the attack needs a low privilege account, so exposure depends on who holds router logins as well as on network reach. Review the list of admin accounts and remove any you do not recognise.

What to do now

  1. Identify every UTT 512W you run and record its firmware version.
  2. Turn off remote administration from the internet. Allow the admin interface only from a management network.
  3. Change the admin password to a unique, long value and remove unused accounts.
  4. Ask the vendor whether a fixed firmware exists for this and the related /goform handlers, and apply it if so.
  5. If no fix is offered, plan to replace the unit, and keep it off any network path that reaches sensitive systems until then.
  6. Monitor the device for unexpected reboots or configuration changes, which can follow memory corruption bugs.

Why it matters

The weakness is CWE-120, a classic buffer copy without checking size, which sits under CWE-119, improper restriction of operations within the bounds of a memory buffer. strcpy copies until it meets a terminating byte, so an input longer than the destination can overwrite adjacent memory.

On a router, that class of bug can crash the web service or, in the worst case, change how the device runs. The record scores confidentiality, integrity and availability impact as high, and the exploit is described as public. This CVE is not on the CISA KEV list, so there is no report here of use against real targets.

Going further

Embedded devices rarely get fast patches, so assume the exposure window is long. The strongest control you control yourself is reach: if only a management VLAN can talk to the admin interface, a memory bug in a web handler matters far less. Write that rule into your network standard so new units follow it from day one.

Keep a record of each router's model, firmware and location. When the next advisory arrives for the same family, you can answer within minutes instead of days.

Quick check

Does this need a login?

Per the CVSS vector it needs a low privilege account. That lowers risk compared with an open endpoint, but shared or weak admin passwords undo much of the benefit.

Is there a firmware fix?

The record does not name one. Check the vendor's download page and support channel, and do not assume a newer image is clean without a note that says so.
