Choosing an SCA tool in 2026, what to test before you buy

A good SCA tool finds transitive dependencies, ranks findings by real risk and fits your pipeline. A trial plan and honest limits, with no vendor ranking.

A good software composition analysis tool finds your direct and transitive dependencies, matches them to vulnerability data accurately, tells you which findings matter, and fits your pipeline. We do not rank vendors. The way to choose is to test two or three tools on your own repositories and compare results.

What does SCA actually do?

SCA inventories third party components in a project and flags those with publicly reported flaws. OWASP Dependency-Check is a useful reference for how the basic approach works: analyzers collect evidence about each dependency, use it to identify a Common Platform Enumeration entry, and list the CVEs linked to it. Its data comes from NVD feeds, and for some ecosystems from other sources.

That design explains the typical weakness. Matching by names and identifiers can miss a component or flag the wrong one. Products differ in how they reduce those errors.

What should you test?

Accuracy on your stack. Run each candidate on a repository you know well and check ten findings by hand. Count the false alerts and the misses.

Transitive depth. Does it resolve lock files and build graphs, or only read top level manifests?

Prioritization. A long list of CVEs is not a plan. Reachability analysis, which checks whether your code calls the vulnerable function, can cut the list sharply. Ask how it works and how it handles uncertainty.

Fix guidance. Does it tell you the lowest safe version, and does it warn about breaking changes?

Pipeline fit. CI integration, pull request comments, exit codes and SARIF or JUnit output matter in daily use.

Ecosystems. Check every language and package manager you use, plus containers.

SBOM output. An SBOM in a standard format helps with customer requests. CISA describes an SBOM as a list of ingredients that make up software components, and treats it as a building block of supply chain risk management.

Data location. Where does the scan run, and what leaves your environment?

What are the honest limits?

SCA covers known issues in third party code. It does not find flaws in your own code, and it cannot warn about a package that has a flaw nobody has reported. Vulnerability databases lag and disagree. Some tools add malware and typosquat detection, which is worth asking about, though coverage varies.

How should the trial run?

Use two weeks. In week one, run on three repositories and record components found, findings, false alerts and scan time. In week two, wire the best candidates into one pull request flow and watch how developers react. A tool that nobody reads is not protecting anyone.

Safeguard's SCA includes reachability analysis, and you can try the free in-browser scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan for up to 100 dependencies. Judge it by the same checklist as the others.

What to do

  1. List your languages, package managers and where code is built.
  2. Pick three repositories of different size and age.
  3. Run two or three candidates on all three.
  4. Verify ten findings per tool by hand.
  5. Compare how many findings each tool marks as reachable or urgent.
  6. Test the pull request experience with real developers.
  7. Check SBOM output and data location, then decide.

Quick check

Is a free SCA tool enough?

For a small project, possibly. Free tools can find known issues, but prioritization, policy and reporting often need more.

Why do tools disagree on the same repository?

They use different data sources and different matching methods, so counts differ. That is why a hands on test matters.
