Best ASPM tools: what they do and how to choose one

Compare ASPM tools, from DefectDojo to Cycode, OX Security, ArmorCode, Snyk and Aikido, by what they say they do, plus a checklist to choose one.

ASPM (application security posture management) tools pull findings from your scanners into one place, remove duplicates and rank risk by context. There is no verified single best. DefectDojo is open source. Cycode, OX Security, ArmorCode, Snyk and Aikido are commercial. Choose by which scanners you already run and who triages findings.

Safeguard publishes this guide and sells a competing product, so we describe other tools only from their own documentation, as of 19 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • ASPM sits on top of scanners. It does not replace the need to scan.
  • Two designs exist: aggregators that import results from many tools, and platforms that bundle their own scanners.
  • Vendor claims about false positive reduction come without published methodology on the pages we read, so test with your own data.
  • The first job of any ASPM tool is a clean asset and owner inventory.

What is ASPM?

Most definitions are from vendors and agree on the basics: ASPM collects security signals from development, build and runtime, correlates them, and helps you decide what to fix first. Gartner is often cited as having named the category. We could not retrieve Gartner's own definition, so we do not quote it here.

Which ASPM tools are there?

The table summarises each vendor's own wording. These are marketing descriptions, and we have not verified any of them.

ToolTypeHow the vendor describes it
DefectDojoOpen source (BSD 3-Clause) plus Pro edition"A DevSecOps, ASPM, and vulnerability management tool"; imports results from "500+ security tools" and helps deduplicate and prioritize
ArmorCodeCommercialASPM as one of four solutions; claims to unify findings from 400+ security tools and offers code to cloud traceability and ownership
CycodeCommercialPlatform with SAST, SCA, secrets, container and IaC scanners plus ASPM in a risk posture group; cites an IDC MarketScape ASPM leader recognition
OX SecurityCommercial"Unified, code first" platform; ASPM described as prioritizing exploitable, reachable and impactful risks
SnykCommercialRisk based prioritization page describes asset discovery, context enrichment and a risk score using factors such as reachability, exploit maturity, EPSS and CVSS
AikidoCommercialBundles code, cloud and attack scanners; the page we read lists no pricing

We could not fetch Apiiro's pages (they returned an access error), so it is not described here.

What is the difference between aggregators and platforms?

An aggregator, such as DefectDojo or ArmorCode, takes the scanners you already have and combines their output. A platform, such as Cycode, OX Security or Aikido, ships its own scanners and puts the posture view on top.

Aggregators suit teams with a settled toolset. Platforms suit teams that want fewer vendors. Either way, ASPM quality depends on the data going in.

How do I choose an ASPM tool?

  1. Which of your current scanners and CI systems does it integrate with?
  2. Does it map each finding to an owner and a repository or service?
  3. How does it rank risk, and can you see the factors?
  4. Does it use reachability or runtime context, or only CVSS?
  5. Can it open tickets and enforce policy gates in your workflow?
  6. Does it deduplicate across scanners, and can you check that on your data?
  7. Where is data stored, and does source code leave your environment?
  8. What is the price at your repository count, and what happens when you add scanners?

How do I run a fair ASPM trial?

Import the same real backlog into two tools. Count how many findings each collapses into a single issue. Check whether the top ten items are ones your team would actually fix. Ask each vendor to show how a finding was marked low priority, so you can audit it.

Where does Safeguard fit?

Safeguard offers reachability analysis, SBOM generation and import, and a Gold registry of packages, CVEs with CISA KEV status and malicious packages. You can try the dependency side with the free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan, which checks up to 100 dependencies in your browser with no login. Safeguard also has a CLI and local runner that keeps source on your machine, and an MCP server. Related reading: ASPM evaluation criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free ASPM tool?

DefectDojo has an open source edition under the BSD 3-Clause license. It also has a paid Pro edition.

Is ASPM the same as vulnerability management?

They overlap. ASPM adds application context, such as code ownership and where a component is used, to the usual findings list.

Do I still need scanners if I buy ASPM?

Yes, either your own or the ones bundled in the platform. ASPM ranks findings; it does not find them from nothing.

Can I trust a vendor's false positive reduction figure?

Treat it as a claim to test. The pages we read gave no methodology, so measure on your own backlog.

What should I do first?

Build an inventory of repositories, services and owners. Every ASPM tool depends on it.
