ASPM: how to decide whether you need it and what to ask

A decision guide for application security posture management: when it pays off, eight questions to ask any vendor and the limits no dashboard removes.

ASPM tools collect findings from your scanners into one deduplicated, prioritised and owned list. They pay off when you run several scanners across many repositories and spend more time merging results than fixing them. They do not find vulnerabilities themselves, and they cannot fix a process where nobody owns findings.

ASPM stands for application security posture management. This guide gives criteria, not a ranking of vendors.

Do you need one?

Answer four questions honestly.

Do you run three or more scanners across more than a handful of repositories? Do the same findings appear in more than one? Can you tell, for a given finding, which team owns it and when it is due? Are audit requests for evidence taking days?

If the answers are no, no, yes, no, you probably need a better process, not a platform. If they are yes, yes, no, yes, a posture tool is worth a trial.

What should you ask a vendor?

1. Which scanners and formats do you ingest? Look for open formats. SARIF is an OASIS standard for static analysis output, and CycloneDX and SPDX cover inventories. Lock-in to one format is a warning.

2. How do you deduplicate? Ask for a demo with two scanners reporting the same flaw in the same repository.

3. How do you rank? Look for known exploitation from CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue, EPSS probability from FIRST and reachability. CISA's SSVC shows an alternative: a decision tree using exploitation status, technical impact, automatable, mission prevalence and public well-being impact.

4. How do findings reach owners? Ask about code ownership sources, ticketing and chat integrations, and what happens when an owner is unknown.

5. How do exceptions work? An exception needs an approver, a reason and an expiry that reopens it.

6. What evidence can you export? Auditors want dated records of who decided what. Ask for a sample export.

7. Where does data live, and can we run it ourselves? Some teams need on-premise or isolated operation, or control over which AI models see their data.

8. What is the exit path? Can you take your findings, decisions and history with you in open formats?

Where does Safeguard fit?

Safeguard offers reachability analysis, compliance automation and your choice of Full AI, Zero AI or bring your own model. Evaluate it against the same eight questions as everyone else, and test it on your own repositories.

What are the limits?

Garbage in, garbage out. If a scanner misses an area, the posture view hides it. Prioritisation signals describe the past: KEV lists exploited flaws, and EPSS estimates a 30 day probability, with scores from 0 to 1. Deduplication can merge things that should stay separate, so sample it. A dashboard improves visibility, and the work still has to be done by people.

What to do

  1. Answer the four questions above and write down the numbers.
  2. List your scanners and their export formats.
  3. Pick two candidate tools or one candidate and your spreadsheet baseline.
  4. Run a trial on three real repositories with known duplicate findings.
  5. Score each tool against the eight questions.
  6. Decide, and set a review date six months out to check the benefit.

Quick check

Is ASPM the same as a vulnerability scanner?

No. A scanner finds issues. ASPM aggregates, deduplicates and prioritises findings from scanners and assigns them to owners.

Which signals should rank findings?

Known exploitation, probability of exploitation and reachability, plus your own context such as asset importance. Severity alone is not enough.
