What are the common traps when presenting these numbers?
Four traps recur. First, mixing leading and lagging indicators on the same chart; keep MTTR (lagging) and reachable exposure (leading) on separate slides. Second, using CVSS as a risk proxy; it isn't, and a sharp CFO will point that out within a quarter. Third, celebrating a drop in total vulnerability count without explaining whether it was remediation, deprioritization, or a scanner change. Fourth, promising MTTR improvements the team cannot staff for; committing to a 48-hour critical SLA without 24/7 coverage is a career-shortening move.
The disciplined pattern is: lead with exposure in dollars, show MTTR distribution not just median, explain each movement's cause, and attach every target to a dated commitment signed by an accountable VP.
