  • Workflow-specific data handling. The customer has to document how their specific use of the API handles data.
  • Eval methodology for the customer's workflow. OpenAI publishes model-level benchmarks, not workflow-level ones.
  • Audit trail for reasoning. The API logs call-level events, not decision-level reasoning.
  • Incident response commitments tied to the customer's specific use case.

Customers deploying raw GPT-5 for security workloads build this compliance documentation themselves. The engineering effort is not small.

A concrete procurement question

A regulated-industry customer evaluates two options:

Option A: Build a security assistant on OpenAI's GPT-5. Low per-token cost. Free to architect. Option B: Deploy Griffin AI (which uses Anthropic Claude under the hood).

The procurement team asks:

  1. What is the SOC 2 Type II evidence for the workflow?
  2. What is the data-handling documentation specific to the security assistant use case?
  3. What eval methodology is documented?
  4. What incident-response commitments apply?

Option A's answer to each is "the customer team has to build this." Option B's answer is "documented, exportable, updated with each release."

The cost delta between the two shows up in the months of compliance engineering required for Option A — work that never appeared in the initial TCO comparison.

When raw API deployment makes sense

Two cases:

  • Non-regulated workloads where compliance documentation is not the binding constraint.
  • Organisations with dedicated AI-engineering and compliance-engineering capacity that treat compliance documentation as a product.

For regulated industries, pre-built compliance posture is worth more than list-price comparison would suggest.
