The inventory cadence question is one of those recurring debates that sounds boring until it costs an organization real money in an incident. How often should the asset inventory be refreshed? The traditional answer, baked into ITIL and most compliance frameworks, is some variation of "at least quarterly." The auditor wants evidence that the inventory was reviewed, signed off, and treated as authoritative. Quarterly meets the literal requirement. It also produces an inventory that is wrong by the time the spreadsheet is uploaded.

What "quarterly" really means in practice

Coverage reporting. Coverage of any control, scanning, signing, EDR, depends on knowing what assets exist now, not what existed last quarter.
